BOURBON - Several older trees along one of the town's main thoroughfares will be removed in the near future. Street department supervisor Roger Terry told town council members that NIPSCO is upgrading service in Bourbon and has contracted with a tree service for the work. Trees growing on the south side of Center Street from Harris Street to the car wash will be removed. He said poles now on the edge of the curb will be moved back. The wires run through most of the trees and to trim away enough to clear the wires would ruin the old trees. Terry said the tree service will replace the old trees with smaller, decorative trees.
In other business, utilities superintendent Marty Martin gave estimates of the cost to re-roof two buildings. Morris and Sons of Bourbon will do the work on the main lift station for $1,462 and the treatment pond building for $1,147.
Martin said the storm sewer project on the east side of town is going well and there have been three change orders so far at an additional cost of $4,700. "I hope we don't find any more surprises," he said, explaining that workers have "discovered a couple of drain tiles we didn't know were there." According to Martin, the contractor is now waiting for delivery of a manhole structure which they will install and complete the job, probably by the end of next week.
Town clerk Jackie Murphy said a meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 12 with architect Brent Martin and any contractors who are interested in bidding on the town hall renovation project. She said bids for that project will be opened at 2 p.m. Oct. 20 for study and the job will be awarded at the council meeting beginning at 7:30 p.m. the same day.
Murphy said her office will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Allen Peckham said the town-sponsored Halloween party will take place at the park from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 31. Trick-or-treat hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. that same evening.
The council also approved the appointment of Warren Cumberland for another four-year term on the library board.
