NIPSCO Accident Cause Uncertain

The cause of a downed NIPSCO utility pole that closed a section of Detroit Street in Warsaw Sunday is still unknown.

A NIPSCO utility pole caught fire, then broke into two pieces around 3:47 p.m. Sunday on Detroit Street near Reneker's Sport Shop.

A section of Detroit Street was closed while NIPSCO crews worked at the scene.

While working at that location Monday morning, a gas main was hit, causing NIPSCO to shut off the gas in that area between 5:30 and 6 a.m., according to Mike Charbonneau, manager of public affairs for NIPSCO.

Charbonneau said that only one customer was without gas service as of Monday afternoon, and that was due to that customer not being home.

There is no timetable as to when NIPSCO will know what caused the utility pole to catch on fire.

"Right now we're focusing on getting everything up and running again," said Charbonneau.
