Continuously serving Kosciusko County since 1854
Two local girls basketball players have been invited to the 14th annual South Bend Tribune All-Star game, which will be played at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Wiekamp Center at Bethel College.
Wawasee sophomore Shanna Zolman, who led the state in scoring, earned an invitation, as did Triton forward Missy Nifong.
Zolman led the state in scoring with 33 points per game. She shot 57 percent from the field and hit 48 percent of her three-pointers. She averaged 7.4 rebounds, 5.5 steals and and 3.1 assists per game and hit 92 percent of her free throws. Zolman led the Warriors to their first sectional title since 1986.
While Zolman was invited, she cannot play in the game. Only seniors will see playing time in the game as IHSAA rules prohibit underclassmen from competing in the game.
Nifong was the lone senior on a Triton team that won Saturday's Class A state championship 57-54 in overtime against Rising Sun. The 5-foot-11 Nifong scored 17 points in the win. She averaged 13 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Nifong, who hit two key three-pointers in the last minute of overtime, won the Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award.
The game features metro players from Elkhart, Mishawaka and South Bend against area players from the northern part of the state. Zolman was named the Area Player of the Year, while South Bend Washington junior Jacqueline Batteast, who averaged 21 points and 14 rebounds per game, was named Metro Player of the Year.
South Bend Clay's Diane Robertson was named Metro Coach of the Year, while Plymouth's Dave Cox was named Area Coach of the Year.
The area players won last year's game 80-72.
