WINONA LAKE - NiBlock will complete street improvement projects in Winona Lake.
The Winona Lake Town Council approved the company's bid for street improvement projects in Winona Lake at its meeting Tuesday.
The bid for the projects total $19,763.40.
Town Council President Rolly Ortega said the engineers estimate was $19,849.24 and the bid came in $85.84 lower than the estimates.
He said there were various street improvement projects that were put out for bid, but NiBlock was the only bid received.
"We were pleased to see that the bids for our street improvement projects came in lower than expected," Ortega said.
Quotes also were received for improvements on Court Circle/Court Street, two portions on Pierceton Road and Wooster Road, totaling $26,000.
A public hearing for the 2007 budget also was held. The council approved a petition to appeal for a $3,600 increase in the maximum levy. The increase will help cover an increase in the general fund for a police vehicle and an increase in assessed valuation. Clerk-Treasurer Retha Hicks said the budget is the same as last year except the two increases.
The budget total for the general fund is $1,069,500. The park and recreation budget is $35,500, local roads and streets is $39,445, economical development income tax fund is $800,000, local law enforcement fund is $2,500, redevelopment fund is $160,000, motor vehicle and highway fund is $633,575, rainy day fund is $110,000 and the riverboat fund is $75,000.

Approved a payment for a pavement-marking project along Park Avenue that exceeds $2,500. Street Superintendent Pete O'Connell said the project is almost complete. Pavement marking will be completed this weekend along Winona Avenue.
Approved seawall improvements on the west side of the canal to the footbridge north in Winona Lake.
Approved hiring a temporary office person for indexing archives, blueprints and sewer drawings for Winona Lake. Rebecca Hupp will serve in the position for a year at a salary of $11 an hour.
Ortega gave an update on upcoming events in Winona Lake. Events include "The Art of Caring" Charity Art Auction to benefit United Way Thursday, Sailboat Regatta Saturday, Light the Night Sept. 21, Fall Festival in the Village at Winona Oct. 7-8 and the Arthritis Foundation Walk at the Winona Lake Park Oct. 7.
Town Council members are Ortega, Jeff Carroll, Jerry Clevenger, Dave Delp and Joy Lohse.
