New Warsaw PD Takes Visitors Over Weekend

It's all bigger, better and much, much brighter.

The Warsaw Police Department opened its doors to the public Sunday afternoon with a skeleton crew of officers guiding people through the 15,760-square-foot facility on West Fort Wayne Street.

The department moved from cramped quarters in city hall to the former NIPSCO building earlier this spring.

The city purchased the nine-acre property last year for $575,000. Remodeling cost $810,000.

Detective Steve Adang, speaking from one of four offices assigned to detectives on the second floor, is still getting used to the changes.

His former office was in the city hall's basement.

"We used to be in the basement of city hall," he said, with sunlight streaming in the window. "I shared a smaller office with another detective in city hall. There I could yell and be heard by everyone. Now I have to use the telephone pager."

The second story also has two interview rooms, an activity that often took place in the hallways at city hall.

The department has 25 sworn officers and 15 civilian employees. The uniform patrol division is the largest division, with 22 assigned officers.

The new facility offers plenty of space to grow.

On the main floor there is a huge training room, a polygraph room, squad room, conference room, a place for evidence storage, a huge front lobby and several offices.
