New Lights On Center, Main Streets Put In For SafetyThe new traffic lights before the train tracks approaching downtown Warsaw on Center and Main streets were put in for safety.
Motorists will be stopped while they’re driving west on Center Street or Main Street right before the railroad tracks before Hickory Street.
Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer said the project was a joint project between the Indiana Department of Transportation and Norfolk Southern.
“INDOT and the railroad had huge safety concerns because they’ve got these freight trains barreling through on city streets,” Thallemer said.
Hunter Petroviak, public relations director for Fort Wayne INDOT, said the reason the second signal was put up is to help prevent any cars or vehicles from stopping on the tracks.
“If you’re on Ind. 15, you could have traffic back up and it could go onto the tracks, so those signals will work in coordination with each other to prevent people from stopping on the railroad tracks,” Petroviak said. “That new light will turn red sooner to help stop traffic while the other one will stay green to keep those cars moving out.”
Petroviak said the timing of the lights is still being worked out.
