New Hope Clubhouse will display more than 50 pieces of art Thursday and Saturday to raise community awareness of mental illness.
Exhibits will premiere Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m., and Saturday noon to 5 p.m with authors of the submitted works reading poetry at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Clubhouse collected works from artists throughout Indiana for this event, an exhibit titled "Mind's Eye." The exhibit features works done solely by adult artists who experience serious mental illness. A large range of categories and mediums, including oil paintings, watercolor, poetry, collages, drawings and computerized art will be on display. Displays representing artists from Warsaw, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Marion will be shown.
New Hope Clubhouse is at the corner of High Street and Winona Avenue. Parking for the event is adjacent with Indiana Lakes Federal Credit Union.
Clubhouse is a voluntary program that provides adults having serious mental illness with the support they need to regain confidence and self-esteem, and to establish positive work habits and social skills. New Hope is a division of Northeastern Center. Clubhouse members and staff work together as colleagues and are encouraged to make decisions in the Clubhouse and in their own lives.
Many of the works submitted Thursday and Saturday speak to the struggles one experiences with mental illness. Some of the themes of the exhibit include expressions of isolation, pain, mood swings and healing. Other works showcase the interests and talents of these artists.
The purpose of this exhibit is to break stigma that surrounds people with mental illness by showcasing the amazing talent and creative genius of people with this illness.
