SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. - Warsaw's Jerry Nelson overcame an erratic start and a bogey on No. 17 to win the 15th annual Dale Morey Society of Seniors Championship at Mid Pines Resort Friday.
A final round 2-over 74 gave Nelson a 54-hole total of 219, 4-over for two rounds at Mid Pines and nearby Pine Needles Country Club. The scheduled third round Thursday at Pine Needles was rained out.
"Standing at the 17th tee, I thought if I birdied one of the last two holes I might have a chance," Nelson said.
Instead he bogeyed the par-4 17th, hitting his tee shot into the woods, but he finished with a par on No. 18 to win by one stroke.
Earlier this year, Nelson won the senior division in the Coleman Invitational at Seminole in North Palm Beach, Fla. and the Crump Cup at Pine Valley in Clementon, N.J.
