Nelson For Nelson

Editor, Times-Union:
My husband, Jerold “Jerry” Nelson is running for Winona Lake Councilman, Ward 3. Jerry is known for attending almost every single meeting and asking questions and providing a different perspective. But there is a big difference between asking challenging questions from the audience and working on and through matters with the council before items of great importance are presented.
Jerry is a man who does the right thing because he is following directives from a higher authority, God. The wonderful thing about being God centered is if Jerry wins the election, God answers prayer and if Jerry does not, God answers prayer. I think, myself, Jerry would be the answer to prayer for Winona Lake, at this time, because he is a good and righteous man.
Jerry does the right thing for family. We have lived in Winona Lake over 30 years and vacationed here 53 years. Our extended family has about 15 homes on the island. We are very close and it is wonderful. I am his wife Jan, who served as a CASA here for 10 years. Our daughter Janene (Chad) Hudson - grandchildren: Wakelyn, Bishop, Brighan live in Winona Lake and son Jay (Kate) Nelson in Edgewater, Colo.
Jerry does the right thing for Winona Lake. Dane Miller was a gift to our community. His interaction with us was a tiny example of what made Jerry want to do right for our community. The empty lot property next to ours on the canal had great difficulty staying mowed by its owners, who, I was told, were the Village At Winona. Often Jerry had it mowed to look decent. Tired of it all one day, I walked the Village At Winona Office and knocked on the door. "Come in" boomed a voice. It was Dane! He was covering everything, in the middle of a lawsuit with his manager. We talked about his situation for a long time and then he said he didn't know if he owned the lot! After talking more, he suddenly said, "Here it is! I found it! I do own it! It's Okay. You can mow it!"
I thanked Dane and laughed to myself all the way home, after our heartfelt talk! I just talked to Jerry and we got it mowed that day.
The next day, I was on our pier and my cell phone rang. I answered and Dane Miller said, "Jan, I was wondering if you and Jerry would like to buy that piece of property we talked about yesterday." Oh, was I glad we mowed it! And, Jerry and I got to know Dane a lot better and gained property at a decent price. God bless you, Dane and your wife, Mary Louise. Winona Lake will remember you forever.
He is a lawyer and knows right from wrong. He chooses to do the right thing, not just the easy thing or the thing that pleases one loud group or another. He is an Indiana licensed professional engineer so he will not make building decisions that will not work. I really hope you vote for him!
