Set in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, N.Y., "Brighton Beach Memoirs" is Neil Simon's funny memoir of his family in the 1930s.
Fourteen-year-old Eugene Jerome is preoccupied by his passion for the Yankees and his passion for his beautiful cousin, Nora. Eugene's comic growing pains contrast with the darker issues troubling his family: poverty, illness and the growing Nazi threat to relatives in Europe. Simon creates a Brooklyn universe full of memorable characters, humor and truth.
Playing the lead role of Eugene, the young boy coming of age, is Cameron Carter. Cameron attends Warsaw Community High School and has been a participant in the Wagon Wheel Youth Theatre program for five years. Last year he played Albert Peterson in the Youth Theatre production of "Bye Bye Birdie".
Tara Rusinack plays Laurie. She portrayed Scout in last years' "To Kill A Mockingbird" and is currently a student at Lakeland Christian Academy.Serving as guest directors for "Brighton Beach Memoirs" are Andy Robinson and Ben Dicke. Robinson and Dicke also serve as the co-founders of the Wagon Wheel Youth Theatre programs.
When the Wagon Wheel Theatre first presented "Brighton Beach Memoirs" in 1987, Northwestern University student Brian D'Arcy James played Eugene. Currently, James is starring as the title role in Shrek on Broadway, and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a leading role in a musical.
