Needs Help

Editor, Times-Union:

I lost my job due to the economy and decided to give education another chance, where I have been succeeding in my program. The trouble is most of my household consumable expenses were being paid by my income, which is now severely limited. I have been basically living off community pantries and soup kitchens. I don't know what I'd do without them. I was persuaded to ask for food stamps recently. I was told I met all income requirements, but was ineligible due to the fact I'm a student. Why should I be punished for trying to better myself?

I hate asking for help. It seems in this society if you have any minor disability you are expected to give up. I have struggled my entire life fighting stereotypes, trying to get the best education, job, or whatever. I'm not asking for anything to be handed to me, just a little help. If I wanted to leech off society, I would of given up at 18 and fought more for disability. I never regret that decision, thinking about all the life experiences that person would have missed and what his quality of life would be scares me to death.

Again all I want is a hand up and to be treated has equal on my experience and education, not judged on solely on my disabilities.
