NAPPANEE - The Nappanee Police Department is investigating a motor vehicle-train accident that happened Friday at approximately 9 a.m.
An eastbound CSX freight train struck half of a modular home that was being pulled across the Jackson Street railroad crossing. The truck driver, Lamoin A. Caskey of Osseo, Mich., was not injured and the crew of the train was treated for minor cuts from the debris that struck the train.
The home was a total loss and there was approximately $40,000 in damage to the train. A witness stated a westbound train had just crossed the crossing when Caskey started across the tracks and was struck by the eastbound train. Part of the investigation is to determine if the crossing lights were working at the time of the accident. Train traffic was stopped for approximately 2-1/2 hours while the accident was investigated and debris was cleaned up.
