My husband and I visited the Warsaw, Pierceton and Elkhart area for about two weeks in September. While there we decided to look for the gravestone of an aunt, Iva Bennett, daughter of Alta and Walter Bennett, who died in a fire when she was just 4 years old. We were certain it was in the Washington-Union Cemetery.
Two relatives from Chicago joined us for the day because they had visited it about 30 years ago with my dad (Iva's brother). Because we thought we knew what the stone looked like we were unsuccessful that day.
After connecting with your wonderful County Historical Society we located the grave site. Apparently, the stone had become illegible or broken and had been replaced by a beautiful red granite stone. Apparently, someone or possibly shirttail relative had cared enough to replace the stone.
It touched our hearts so much that we want to thank whoever it was that still cared enough almost 100 years later to do this loving deed. My dad and grandparents still wept about the tragedy until their dying days.
I would like to hear from and possibly thank whoever did this benevolent act or if someone knows who did it to let me know.
