U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock made a campaign stop at Culver’s in Warsaw Friday to talk about his campaign.
Mourdock faces incumbent U.S. Senator Richard Lugar in Tuesday’s primary.
Mourdock is currently serving as the 53rd treasurer of Indiana. A Republican, he began his four-year term Feb. 10, 2007, and was re-elected in November 2010.
During an interview Friday at Culver’s, Mourdock said he is looking forward to Tuesday’s primary.
“I’m willing to make the hard choices and am running on the philosophies that encouraged me to run for the seat including making government smaller, lowering taxes and giving individuals more freedom,” Mourdock said.
Mourdock spoke about the national debt, and said the debt needs to be reduced by reducing the size of government.
“”We need to grow the economy and I will roll back the size of government so businesses can grow and prosper,” Mourdock said.
He said he differs from Lugar in that Lugar sees the government as the answer, but Mourdock said he sees government as a problem.
“I want to get government out of the way so businesses can thrive, jobs can be created and there can be a higher standard of living,” Mourdock said.
He said he is not willing to compromise on his belief that the government should not spend more money than it has.
He spoke about energy and said America needs to develop American energy resources.
Mourdock said Obamacare must be repealed.
He said he supports a healthcare plan that is patient-centered and depends on the private market. He said health insurance laws need to be changed so health insurance companies can sell the insurance across state lines to bring more competition that he said will drive health insurance costs down.
Mourdock said premium health insurance support needs to be provided for those over age 55 so they can maintain Medicare at current levels.
