Most Roads Passable Today

Many more of the roads in the county were passable this morning and city crews were finishing up removing snow from High Street, the last roadway blocked by piled-up snow.

"Some of the roads hadn't been plowed as of yesterday," a spokesman with the Kosciusko County Highway Department said this morning. "We're trying to get everything busted open."

Disabled vehicles left in the roadways hindered the progress of county snow plows. There were also "quite a few" large drifts and "if you hit one of those and get pulled in, you're done.

"We had fair warning that this was going to happen," the county highway spokesman said. "We couldn't have had better warning." He added that the county plows were ready when the storm hit and crews have been working from first thing in the morning until at least 6:30 p.m. daily.

Roads that have so far been impassable should have clearance at least one way by this evening.

When the plows are put away for the night, they're parked at the area fire stations so they can help dig out ahead of emergency vehicles if necessary.

In Warsaw city limits, officials said High Street was the only street that still had large piles of snow as of late this morning and cleanup was being done at that time.

Alleys are being plowed on the neighborhoods' scheduled trash pickup days. Monday's trash schedule was being taken care of this morning, with Tuesday's trash customers on tap for this afternoon.

Crews are working overtime and through their lunch hours to take care of the snow and the trash. "We hope to get caught up on trash by Thursday," a city spokesman said.

State highway officials could not be reached for comment.

Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine said there have been few weather-related traffic accidents and he believes motorists are "taking it easy."

The largest number of complaints have come from people whose cars have been buried by snow plows, Rovenstine said.
