More Memories

I had such a response regarding my last letter, I was asked to write more regarding years ago.

I lived on a farm during the first six grades. I always had wonderful teachers even high school. When on the farm my dad had about nine acres of raspberries. He with a Model T Ford would go to get pickers. They would sit on rear fenders and lay on front fenders and stand on running boards. Berry dealers contracted with Dad for $2.35 per case (24) pints. Dad paid 2 cents per pint to pick. I was foreman and received 75 cents per day plus could work under a large tree in shade.

When busy driving horses, farming, mother came and said a house was on fire, I put the horses in the barn and went with Dad two miles to the fire. Many men were there, carrying things out of the house. I think lightning struck the house.

We then had about two miles to school. By the side of the road was two telephone wires all along the road. One time as we walked, lightening traveled up and down on the wires.

A popular game we played outdoors was "Pump, pump pull away, take a horse and run away." We would place a long line as a goal. A second line about 50 feet away. One person would stand between the lines and say, "Pump, pump pull away." All then must run from one line to the other. If the one who stood in the center tagged anyone, they had to join him. Eventually all would be in center. Then the game would start over.

A man's word then meant something. I think the greatest happening in life as I said in previous letter is when my wife and I purchased a new home. We needed some work done in the back yard. Men would gather at a corner, hoping someone would pick them up for a job and something to eat. I was busy working. My wife drove over and picked up a man. He worked a while. She gave him something to eat, then drove him back to that corner. My son remembered him. He said, "His name was Johnny. His breathe smelled of liquor. He was a nice man." No problem.

Good ingredients make a good cake. John Adams, second president of the United States, said something like, "If everyone would believe God's Word, obey His Word in a certain region, what a paradise that region would be." We have the recipe for an abundant life. What are we waiting for?
