NORTH WEBSTER – A group of concerned outdoorsmen and women spent this week putting six more fish cribs in Webster Lake.
In January, they put in five.
Gary Dant is one of the outdoorsmen leading the project.
“Fish cribs are used to give younger fish a place to hide out,” said Dant. “It’s a way to ensure that predators don’t get their way all the time.”
Lyn Crighton, of Tippecanoe Watershed Foundation, was on hand Thursday as the fish cribs left a public launch on Webster Lake.
“Fish are important part of the ecology of the lake,” said Crighton. “We need diversity of wildlife.”
Fish cribs provide an artifical habitat where fish can hide and spawn.
Dant said, however, it will improve more than just the fish on Webster Lake.
A volunteer force from a Carmen Pier company provided help, as did Charlie Baker, who provided equipment like a backhoe and time.
The local bass club also helped with donations.
Crighton said this project was also a good way to get word out about a TWF project to encourage improving natural lakeshores.
Many natural lakeshores have been lost to cement sea walls.
Crighton encouraged those living on the like to use glacial stone or add natural plants or lilly pads if there is no seawall.
The locations of the cribs were approved by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Maps are available at local bait shops.
