More Firefighters Providing Advanced Care To PatientsWarsaw-Wayne Fire Territory Board heard Tuesday there is an uptick in ambulance calls and more firefighters are now qualified to assist.
Fire Chief Mike Wilson said in May there were 245 calls and only 84 of those were fire-related incidents.
Station 1 responded to 77 medical calls; station 2 responded to 70; and station 3 responded to 14.
According to the Lutheran EMS call log, ambulance calls are up, mostly in the transporting of sick patients that are not COVID-related.
WWFT EMS Chief Chris Fancil reported of the 40 staff at WWFT, only six had previously been certified in advanced EMT training. Now, thanks to a class WWFT put on, 22 new staff members are now certified.
Fancil said that means when they get called to help with a medical emergency, those staff members are now fully able to immediately begin rendering advanced care to patients.
In other business Tuesday, the Board approved travel requests for firefighter Jason Neher to attend an instructor conference; for WWFT Assistant Chief Aaron Bolinger to attend area training with Elkhart Fire Hazmat and a live fire instructor credential course; and for Wilson and Fancil to attend a suicide prevention and awarenesss class.
The next WWFT Board meeting is 4 p.m. July 6 at City Hall.
