More information was released Monday about Saturday’s two-vehicle collision on Ind. 15 in Warsaw.
According to the Warsaw Police Department accident report, at approximately 9:34 p.m. Saturday, WPD was called to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Ind. 15 and Gilliam Drive, Warsaw.
Upon arrival to the scene, Fredy A. Vasquez Perez, 24, West Old 30, Warsaw, was found unconscious in his 2004 Oldsmobile Alero. He was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. According to the accident report, Vasquez Perez’s vitals were good and had minor lacerations, but further scans were going to be completed.
When alert, Vasquez Perez said he was on Gilliam Drive, facing east, attempting to turn north on Ind. 15. He said he was behind a friend’s vehicle and was following him. Vasquez Perez’s friend’s vehicle pulled out and Vasquez Perez said he did not wait on traffic and followed his friend after he pulled out. That is when Vasquez Perez’s vehicle was hit by a 2004 Nissan Armada driven by Shakira I. Rico, 16, Summertown, Tenn. Vasquez Perez said he couldn’t remember anything else about the accident.
Rico said she was southbound on Ind. 15 when she approached the intersection with Gilliam Drive. She said a vehicle pulled out in front of her and she honked her horn because it was too close. She then said Vasquez Perez’s vehicle pulled out in front of her and she couldn’t brake in time to prevent the accident.
A witness said he was behind Rico’s vehicle southbound on Ind. 15 approaching the intersection. The witness said when the accident happened, Vasquez Perez did not yield to traffic and pulled out directly in front of Rico.
Besides Vasquez Perez’s injuries, Rico complained of knee pain; and a passenger in Rico’s vehicle, Lilibeth Rico, 15, North Ind. 15, Leesburg, complained of leg pain.
According to the accident report, Rico was cited under IC 7.1-5-1-6.5, which is an alcohol-related infraction.
