Some atheists recently complained that they don't like to be mocked by Christians. I sympathize. I'm sure they don't like it any more than Christians like being mocked by atheists. It is no fun, in person, in print or on the net being mocked as "stupid" or "wacko" or hearing God referred to as a "sky pixie," the Bible as a "magic book," or any form of creationism or intelligent design mocked as the "fairy wand theory." Atheists call us "whiners" when we complain about mocking, yet get offended when Christians respond. Don't dish it out if you can't take it.
Here are a few reasons why Christians have had hard feelings toward atheists. First, atheists, like to say, "More people have been killed over religion than any other cause in history." If that's true, it's only because organized religion has been around longer than organized atheism. Though statistics vary, it's believed that organized religion (i.e. Christianity) killed 100 million people in the 20th century alone. Also, Christians have suffered more persecution in the 20th century than at any other time in history, even the 1st century, and more were killed by atheists (i.e. Communists) than by Romans. Is it any wonder that Christians have hard feelings toward their main enemies? (Look it up in Wikipedia.)
Also, atheists like to present themselves as reasonable, intelligent people while presenting Christians as crazed, fanatical killers. Do atheists need to be reminded that some of the worst mass murderers in history were atheists? From Pol Pot and Joseph Staling to Chairman Mao, atheists have killed tens of millions of people whose only sin was being in their way. Atheists say they are appalled when people are killed for religious reasons, but justify mass murder when people are killed for political reasons. Modern political ideologies like Communism are the secular equivalent of religions, demanding their followers devote "the whole of their lives" to the "cause." Are people killed for secular causes somehow less dead than people killed for religious causes?
Maybe both sides should drop the name calling, take an honest look at themselves and engage in substantive discussions on how to preserve our freedoms from atheistic (Communism) and theistic (Islam) tyrannies. Atheists could show how reasonable and enlightened they are while Christians could show how Christ-like they are.
