Mitchell Wins County Treasurer Primary

Sue Ann Mitchell won Tuesday's Republican county treasurer primary race.

Mitchell received 4,084, or 56.15 percent, of the votes, defeating opponent Cindy Nolton, who received 3,190 votes, or 43.85 percent, of the votes.

Mitchell said she found out she had won the primary when a software vendor from the county called and told her Tuesday night."I am absolutely amazed to have won the primary and am pleased with voter support," she said during a phone interview Tuesday night.

Tuesday's primary was the first time she had opposition in seeking a public office. She said Nolton ran a good campaign and thought she would be an effective county treasurer.

Mitchell previously ran twice for county auditor, once for county assessor and twice for Tippecanoe Township assessor. She won those races, and has served Kosciusko County for the past 30 years.

Nolton, who said this was her first time for running for public office, said she was disappointed in not winning the primary, but said she is happy for Mitchell.

"It was fun meeting voters and seeing parts of the county I had not seen before while campaigning," Nolton said in a phone interview Tuesday night.

Nolton currently serves as the chief deputy treasurer and said she looks forward to working with Mitchell if Mitchell wins in the general election in the fall.
