Mistreated

Editor, Times-Union:

As you well know, some of these detainees had charges flimsy as best. Persons are abused in US prisons, nursing homes and mental care facilities every minute of every day. No one should have to suffer from false imprisonment, but it happens.

The problem is that the system established under the previous administration did not really have a procedure to find that an "enemy combatant" was not actually an enemy combatant. You make the fundamental assumption that the victims of torture were criminals, when we know, from recently released documents and statements from former officials, that our government had knowledge that many of the detainees being held and abused were indeed innocent. Bush didn't have the right or legal standing to come in and change the law arbitrarily.

These "detainees" at Gitmo are shackled to the floor so they are in a squatting position; or they are hung by their wrists just near the floor so that their arms come out of their sockets. They alternately are bombarded with strobe lights or flood lights or they are in total blackness. Music blares into their cells or they are kept awake for hours at a time. They are waterboarded, slammed into walls ... yes, medical care is given to them - so they don't die and they are fed foods that sometimes are forbidden to Muslims. Just because our enemies do it, does not mean that the US should be excused for mistreating prisoners. Gitmo is a shameful embarrassment that goes against everything that America is supposed to be. Are we or are we not a country of God or is that another talking point? Christ would not be impressed.

Obama didn't promise a U-turn in foreign policy. Some Americans are still asleep, and you have to wake them gently, or they get upset. Americans are still mistaking Bush fabrications for reality. What is Gitmo all about, besides the cowardice of the disgusting last administration?

Prosecution of the war crime committed by the past administrations are essential to restoring the rule of law to America.

Maybe Flush Rimbowl will come up with the answer.

Better stop and think first, do we want any other country trying an American that did not do a crime in their country? Once this is allowed where does it stop? Wake up before you wish for anything like this once that happens. That is when we have started losing our freedom. Bush went against the Constitution of the United States with his "enemy combatant" and never should have instituted Gitmo. That's what sickens me!

But then again I'm not surprised coming from a party that elected a cheerleader to run the free world. What's next, a mascot? Let me guess, one or all three of the Budweiser frogs?

Where, oh where, why isn't there any mention of the Blackwater thugs?

If it is wrong, it should be stopped as soon as possible. I do not like terrorists either, but as prisoners they are entitled to specific treatment either under criminal or military law.

Oh by the way, I don't read Ann Coulter. Haven't for a long time. Sorry to disappoint. More on that later.
