The Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently was notified by the Indiana DAR American History Essay Committee that the chapter has a winner in the essay contest.
Madison Ann Miller's essay was judged the second-place winner for fifth grade at the Indiana state level of the American History Essay Contest. She is the daughter of Douglas and Angela Miller, Akron, and a student at Akron Elementary School in the Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. She will be honored Saturday at the Indiana State DAR Good Citizens and American History Winners luncheon in Indianapolis.
The American History Essay Contest is for students in grades five through eight. The essay topic for 2008-09 was "The Ideals of the Gettysburg Address."
All essay writers received certificates of participation while the writers of winning essays from each grade and participating school were honored at the Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter Patriotic Tea. The winning essay for each grade level was then sent to the Indiana DAR American History Essay Contest Committee for further judging against all other Indiana DAR chapter winners, and this is how Miller's essay received second place.
The first-place essays from all states are then judged by the national committee for overall winners in the National DAR American History Essay Contest.
