Butler University sophomore Amanda Miller, of Elkhart, has been awarded a $5,000 Roy Hine Performing Arts Foundation internship grant to the prestigious Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, in Madison, N.J.
She will study costume design at the non-profit theater during the coming summer months.
Amanda is the daughter of Marla and Robert Joseph Miller, Elkhart. Robert Miller, a professional actor, is a Wagon Wheel Theatre alumni.
The grant gives Amanda the opportunity to work with one of the premier Shakespeare theater companies in the nation as a costume design intern. At the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, she will be working directly with some of the top costume designers in the country.
Located on the Drew University campus, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is known throughout the United States and Europe for its comprehensive "master classes standards," providing hands-on educational programs for select aspiring performing arts professionals.
The Roy Hine Performing Arts Foundation grant will make it possible for Miller to accept an intense 11-week internship appointment to non-paid study position. She also will frequently travel the 45 minutes to New York City's theater and garment district for skills training."This is our first major internship educational grant to a university theater arts student, and Amanda has already demonstrated talent and ability in Butler University's program," Dan Lee, Roy Hine Performing Arts Foundation president, said. "We are particularly pleased this grant involves an organization with the very high educational program standards and reputation possessed by the non-profit Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey. We look forward to a continuing relationship with them to fulfill Roy Hine's dream assisting talented newcomers in the performing arts."
The Warsaw-based Roy Hine Performing Arts Foundation's educational support programs also grant scholarships to deserving high school seniors and university students majoring in the performing arts. This year's awards are expected to be announced in May.
The Roy Hine Performing Arts Foundation Inc., is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation dedicated to perpetuating the performing arts. Previously know as the Wagon Wheel Theatre Foundation Inc., the organization changed its name last year in honor of the late Roy Hine, long-time Wagon Wheel director, after the foundation was unable to reach an agreement to purchase the local theater from the present owners.
