MILFORD - The Milford Town Council adopted a new ordinance and approved some repair work to town facilities as the main items of business during its recent meeting.
Attorney Adam Turner, of Rockhill Pinnick (filling in for Jay Rigdon who is the regular town attorney), presented an ordinance that in effect dissolves the Milford Park Board. In May, board members Lucille Lovell and Howard Hocksettler resigned. That left Randy Veach as the remaining member of the board.
Under Indiana law, a park board has no real power. Nonetheless, because it is a part of town government, an ordinance is required for its dissolution. At this time no action was taken concerning what roll Veach would have with the Milford Parks Department.
In other park news, work is still being done on the seawall. This repair is in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources. No completion date was given at this time.
Milford Fire Department has been in need of electrical upgrades at the station house. Council approved $1,091 for this work.
Town Marshall Rich Miotto asked council for approval to send officer Derek Kreider to Indianapolis to attend a police investigation school. This training is scheduled Aug. 18-20 at a cost of $275 plus lodging. Council approved Kreider's training.
Two other work projects discussed by council were roof work on the town hall, and garage door repair for the utilities department.
Five quotes were presented for the roof work, but no action was taken at this meeting. Council and utilities superintendent Dallas Winchester will review all quotes and make a decision by next meeting.
There were two quotes for repair of the street department garage door which was damaged during one of the recent storms. Mike's Garage was awarded the contract for replacement of the entire door at a cost of $1,035.01.
Winchester said the Milford Street Department will be assisting area senior citizens during the upcoming Day of Caring. More information will be available soon.
It was announced that the local non-profit organization, Harvest With A Heart, is in the process of purchasing a new building. The group currently is located at 105 West Emeline. "This is our third season," said Angel Hardy, a representative of Harvest With A Heart. "We plan on moving sometime by the end of July or the beginning of August. We were awarded a grant through K21 to purchase the pole building on the corner of Emeline and State Road 15. It's the gray building across from the gas station."
The organization is set up as a distribution center for bulk garden produce. Individuals with an over-abundance of any fresh vegetables are welcome to donate, then the produce is sold for a quarter. "Twenty-five cents can buy one item, or a hand-full of something. You can buy a watermelon for a quarter," Hardy said. "Most people usually pay twenty-five cents per item."
Hardy also said that in the off-season, the organization has received donations from Maple Leaf Farms, and hopes to find a source for other staples such as bread and eggs.
