Milford Man Faces Battery Charge After Hitting CellmateA Milford man faces a felony battery charge after allegedly battering his cellmate in November.
Curtis Allen Walburn, 32, of 427 E. CR 1150N, #19, Milford, was transported from the Elkhart County Corrections and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 2:23 p.m. Tuesday for a charge of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a level 5 felony. His preliminary bond was set at $5,000 surety and $2,500 cash.
His initial hearing is set for 3 p.m. Thursday, according to court documents filed Dec. 20.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputy Mariah Rumple was notified by an inmate on Nov. 25 that he was hit in the face by his cellmate, Walburn. The inmate had a deep cut on the left side of his nose and was experiencing pain on the left side of his ribcage.
The inmate was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital, where medical staff determined his nose was fractured on both sides and an ear, nose and throat specialist would be consulted.
Walburn told KCSO Sgt. Travis Marsh that he was the one who hit the inmate. Walburn had cuts on his knuckles as if from hitting someone.
Video surveillance showed Walburn and the other inmate entering a cell and a third inmate shutting the door and positioning himself to keep the door shut so no inmates could enter or exit the cell. The video also showed Walburn hitting the victim multiple times.
