MILFORD – Milford Town Council agreed to get an estimate for renovating the building that hosts Multi-Township EMS rather than improving it piecemeal.
Council members Monday voted to pay up to $1,500 to Scearce Rudisel Architects for a construction cost projection, at the recommendation of Dan Brown with the Milford Redevelopment Commission. Brown and the council agreed that the town has a better chance of keeping M-TEMS service at acceptable levels if they complete some much-needed improvements to the building, including ventilation and sewage.
“Our facility doesn’t stack up so well against other facilities they use. I think that’s part of the reason for them wanting to reduce their hours here,” Brown told the council. “And the understanding that only 5 percent of their runs are up here.”
Members said they will look at the estimate in January and, if funding is available, may start construction in spring. They also noted they would like to see a long-term commitment from M-TEMS.
The council also agreed to consider the need for more reserve police officers early next year. Town marshal Rich Miotto requested permission to hire one or two more reserve officers, noting that the town currently has four but not all of the volunteer officers are able to maintain their commitment.
Miotto noted there’s no cost to Milford except for uniforms.
The council also approved $3,700 for two replacement heaters for the vehicle bay in the fire hall, plus a third to be donated by Foyle Plumbing and Heating in Syracuse.
Fire Chief Brian Haines reported as well that the fire department will partner with the Milford Food Bank again this year for a food and blanket drive, Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at Dollar General.
Utilities Superintendent Randy Veach announced the first year for a Christmas decorations contest for homes and businesses. Prizes, donated by area businesses, will be awarded for lighting and animation.
Registration forms will be accepted until Dec. 9, with judging Dec. 10 and winners announced Dec. 12. There will be a panel of judges as well as open voting for a people’s choice award.
