Milford First Responders Get Thank You From Live Well Kosciusko

MILFORD - The town of Milford’s first responders received an early Christmas present of sorts at Monday’s Town Council meeting from Live Well Kosciusko.

According to Clerk-Treasurer Tricia Gall, representatives from the group came to the meeting to introduce the K-County First initiative, which is a discount program for Kosciusko County first responders. They presented Milford’s first responders with a discount card, which will give them discounts at participating businesses in the county and they thanked the first responders and participating businesses.

The community building, which is connected to the EMS/Fire building, has some maintenance issues that need to be addressed. The Council approved moving forward on one project and tabled the other until January.

They approved sewer drain work in the EMS part of the building, which will include rehabilitation of the shower, adding a toilet and hand-washing sink, moving the existing washer and dryer, moving the existing mop sink and the existing grease trap and rehabilitating the existing lift pump station. All new drain lines will run to the lift station, due to lack of fall in the bathrooms, according to Gall. Moving the grease trap, which is in the living quarters, will eliminate the odor. The shower is not functioning properly so it needs to be repaired and the additional toilet will eliminate the need for EMS members to go through the community building to use the restrooms when the building is rented out.

Utility Superintendent Steve Marquart obtained two quotes — Foyle Plumbing, Syracuse, with a quote of $13,411.99 and Mr. Rooter, Milford with a quote of $15,050.33. The Council approved the low quote from Foyle Plumbing.

In a related matter, they tabled correcting issues with cracks in the concrete block building. An engineer recommended installing control joints to help with contracting and expanding and a quote from Stichter & Sons Masonry, Milford, was $11,400 and a quote to “skin” the building with metal from Integrity Roofing, Warsaw, was $26,559.

Also in water department business, the Council approved replacing the water line for the fire department that was tabled last month until more information was received whether additional work or parts would be needed.

Marquart reported more parts and labor were needed beyond the quote received from Beer & Slabaugh. An additional $11,343.20 in parts from Utility Supplies, Pierceton, was approved for the project and town employees would do that part of the project.

The Council also approved Beer & Slabaugh installing the 6-foot water line at a cost of $23,600 for a total project cost of $34,943.20.

In other business, the Council:

• Approved an ordinance adding a level to the police pay matrix of $44,000 for recent graduates of marshal school and approved that salary to recent graduate Tyler Schmucker.

• Approved the attorney agreement for 2023 with Jay Rigdon for a base amount of $6,000 plus additional fees.

• Approved the revised street standards and approved adding North Park housing addition streets and the Syracuse Street extension to the road inventory — an additional 1.249 miles for a total of 13.294 miles in town.

• After receiving an OK from the attorney, approved having Sweetheimer remove the concrete bridge at the park at a cost of $1,000, leaving two side sections.

• Approved paying the rent increase from Norfolk & Southern railroad for the alley behind the businesses to $300 a year from $120 a year.

• Approved holiday closings for the clerk’s office of Friday, Dec. 23 and Monday, Dec. 26 and Friday Dec. 20 and Monday Jan. 2.
