MILFORD - Milford Town Council dealt with several issues Monday relating to spring work projects and the upcoming Milford Fest.
Tricia Gall, representing the Milford Lion's Club, gave an update on planned activities for Milford Fest.
The event will be held May 29.
So far, plans include free carnival rides, free pony rides, street entertainment, a cute pet contest, vendors, a parade and a car show. According to Gall, organizers expect more than 100 participants this year. For more information, or to volunteer to help with Milford Fest, call Gall at 574-658-4498.As part of the fest, the communitywide garage sale will again be held. To participate, interested persons must register at the town clerk's office and pay a $3 fee.
Town Marshal Rich Miotto announced that with warmer weather here, the police department will begin tagging junk cars. Once a vehicle is tagged, owners have 10 days to either remove it or repair it. The department is willing to work with owners regarding this time frame, Miotto said.
He said an anonymous donor came forward to help the department purchase new video equipment for patrol cars. The department received a $3,000 grant for the equipment, but that was $1,250 short of the purchase price. Thanks to the concerned citizen, that was taken care of.
The council approved $410 for the department to purchase new shoulder patches for its officers from Emblem Enterprises Inc.
Utilities Superintendent Dallas Winchester announced several projects will start soon. The Waubee drain bridge on Ind. 15 will undergo repairs, beginning July 7, with completion scheduled for Sept. 1. Traffic will be down to one lane during most of this time.
Mosquito fogging will begin Thursday around sunset.
The council approved the M.E. Simpson Co. to perform large water meter testing. According to Winchester, Milford uses 10,732,000 gallons of water a year on average. Repairing or replacing older inaccurate meters, as well as damaged/defective meters, could save up to 1 million gallons annually. The town will pay for the testing.
In current utility expenditures, the council approved $7,499 for the purchase of a riding mower/tractor for the street department. This is the cost after trade-in, to Garden Outdoor Power Equipment, Goshen.
The council approved Super Seal Co. to restripe Main Street at a cost of $758, and to restripe the main town parking lot for $168. The Air Marking Co. will restripe the main section of highway leading into town, for a cost of $3,850.
The utilities department, along with the council, announced the position of building inspector has yet to be filled. Interested parties should pick up an application at the clerk's office. A resumé also is required. For information, call 574-658-4614.
