MILFORD - Two people were killed and two others injured in a three-vehicle accident early this morning.
Pronounced dead at the scene by Kosciusko County Coroner Larry Ladd were Tamy Metcalf, Elkhart, and Ruthie Miller, 53, Goshen. Both were trapped in their vehicles, which were fully engulfed in flames when emergency personnel arrived.
According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, at approximately 1:31 a.m. today on Ind. 15, just south of CR 1350N, a northbound van driven by Miller went left of the center line and struck a pickup truck with a trailer, driven by James Haush, Elkhart. Haush was not injured in the accident.
The van continued northbound - still left of center - and struck another southbound pickup driven by Metcalf.
Sarah Barnhart, 51, of Richmond Dale, Ohio, a passenger in Metcalf's pickup, was transported to Goshen General Hospital in serious condition. Benjamin Haush, 2, also a passenger in Metcalf's pickup, was transported to Goshen General Hospital before being airlifted to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, by Samaritan. He is listed in serious condition at Parkview today.
This morning, Ladd said it is not believed alcohol was a factor in the accident, but said it is likely Miller fell asleep. An autopsy for Miller is scheduled.
The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department was assisted at the scene by the Indiana State Police, Milford Police, Milford Fire and EMS and Syracuse EMS.
