Milford Approves Dept. Purchases

Posted
MILFORD – Town council Monday night approved purchases for three of its departments totaling about $18,500.
Utilities Commissioner Randy Veach requested funds for the repair of three pumps at the wastewater plant.
“The pumps are around 10 years old,” he told the council. “The bearings are going out and they’re yelling real bad.”
The council approved his request to have American Pump Repair and Service Inc., New Palestine, make the needed repairs, but they also asked him to price new pumps with the idea of purchasing a new one in the future, and rotating the new with the older ones. The cost for repair of the three pumps plus shipping is $8,000.
Veach also was given the OK to buy a new ammonia probe for $535 and an E. coli test kit not to exceed $600.
Fire Chief Todd Haines presented bids for three new windows at the fire station. Lake City Builders LLC, Syracuse, was awarded the $3,500 job.
Beyond Landscaping was awarded a bid for $5,892 to replace timbers and plantings at the town park on the north side of Waubee Lake. Councilman Doug Ruch mentioned how town clubs had volunteered in the past to plant flowers and help maintain the landscaped area, and he agreed the area should be kept up.
“If we’re going to have a park, we have to make it nice,” he said.
The three flag poles at the area will be examined to see  if they, too, need repairs or to be replaced. The council also will consider purchase of a bio-waste meter and sampler at a later date, and they tabled until next month a vote to purchase new chairs for the town hall.
Town Marshal Rich Miotto congratulated and thanked all the people who helped out during the recent Medina Body Repair shop fire. Town clerk Joellen Free was one of the many volunteers who took coffee to the firefighters.
Council President Bob Cockburn remarked, “That’s what makes this town as great as it is.”
In other business, the council:
• Advised residents to keep their water running a little bit to prevent pipes from freezing. Veach said that the warmer weather actually is harder on the pipes than the past cold spells.
“The worst is yet to come,” he said.
• Declared April “Month of the Military Child.”
