NORTH MANCHESTER – Mildred Lucille Morris Gilbert, 87, of North Manchester, died at 2:20 p.m. Oct. 3, 2012, in Timbercrest Healthcare, North Manchester. She was born March 15, 1925, in McPherson, Kan., to Charles S. and Miriam Morris. On June 9, 1945, she married J. Edward Gilbert, who died March 25, 2012. Surviving are three daughters: Janice Gilbert Hurst, McPherson, Kan.; Janean Gilbert, Indianapolis; and Janelle Gilbert Hoffmann, New Haven, Mo.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She also was preceded in death by a daughter and a brother. She graduated from Chester High School in 1943 and attended Manchester College. Following her marriage, she joined her husband in College Park, Md., during his service in the Civilian Public Service during World War II. Afterwards they moved to Kokomo, where she worked as a secretary for the Salvation Army and the Kokomo Church of the Brethren. She also ran a freelance mimeographing business from her home for more than 25 years. She was a member of the Kokomo Poetry Circle for 42 years and received awards and recognition for her poems, some printed in national publications. She was a member of the Kokomo Church of the Brethren and later was a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren when they moved to Timbercrest Senior Living Community in 1996. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Timbercrest Chapel, North Manchester, with Pastor Kurt Borgmann officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.
