For many years, several local parents have driven their children to Goshen, Fort Wayne and South Bend to take tumbling and cheerleading instructions.
In summer 2008, Tim and Ruchele Sammons, who have two daughters that have been involved in cheerleading with Warsaw Community Schools, decided to conduct a feasibility and demographic study for the Warsaw and surrounding communities.
The study came back strong, with more than 200 athletes, coaches and parents taking part in the survey.
The Sammons decided to move forward with offering a new facility that would offer tumbling lessons, All-Star cheerleading and expand with gymnastics teams.
The demographic study revealed locating property along U.S. 30, within a 40-mile radius of several school systems, would be the best benefit for parents and their children who would be commuting from other surrounding communities.
During summer 2009, Midwest Xtreme broke ground at 1155 Executive Drive, Warsaw.
On Aug. 16, Midwest Xtreme was given a vote from the Warsaw City Council, allowing the doors to open for local athletes, parents and coaches to use.
Midwest Xtreme is a new gym that is air-conditioned throughout. It has full-size competition cheer floors, 42-feet by 54-feet competition spring floor, 60-foot in-ground tumble track, in-ground trampolines, in-ground foam-landing pit, inclines and handspring equipment.
Several pieces of gymnastic equipment will be added in December.
Midwest Xtreme's coaching staff combined have been training students for cheerleading and tumbling for more than 45 years.
Their students have went on to cheer and perform at Indiana University, University of Tennessee, Purdue, Butler, Anderson, Michigan State, Ball State, Grace College and the University of Notre Dame.
Midwest Xtreme offers All-Star cheerleading and tumbling for ages 3 to 18 years old.
A registration drive will be taking place Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the lobby of Midwest Xtreme.
Midwest Xtreme also will be waving the $40 annual gym fee the day of registration, and be offering a 20-percent sibling discount on all tumbling classes.
The Sammons would also like to offer the gym use for local coaches to have their summer UCA Cheer Camps at, along with training for competitions. The Sammons hope by offering a gym locally, athletes, parents and coaches can save money and time by not having to drive several miles away.
