Middle Schools Present Veterans Day Program

Posted

Most middle school students would be hard-pressed to explain what Veterans Day is and why it is significant.

Not so for the middle school students of Warsaw Community Schools.

For the fifth consecutive year, students of Edgewood and Lakeview middle schools will be treated to an entertaining demonstration of what Veterans Day is all about.

The program for students only is scheduled for 9:10 a.m. in the Lakeview gymnasium. The program will be repeated for the general public at 7 p.m. There is no cost for admission.

"This will be our fifth year doing the Veterans Day program," said Donna Person, band director for both schools. "We feel we need to help the students be more aware of what Veterans Day is and why we need to honor those who have served in the armed services.

"The students today are so far removed from what the veterans sacrificed, we feel we need to make them more aware," she said.

The theme for this year's celebration stresses four key freedoms of citizenship, based upon the famous Norman Rockwell painting: freedom of speech; freedom from want; freedom from fear; and freedom of worship. Four students will speak on those freedoms, explaining why they are important.

The program will also feature guest conductor Artis Faber, from Grace College, leading the combined bands and choirs from both Edgewood and Lakeview.
