Merit Scholar Candidates Named

Posted

Three local students have qualified as semifinalists for the 43rd annual National Merit Scholarship competition.

This year's semifinalists include Christopher Hemmig, North Manchester, a senior at Manchester High School; David Bradford, Bourbon, Triton High School; and Scott Davison, Warsaw, Warsaw Community High School.

These students are among about 15,000 who will continue in the competition for approximately 7,400 Merit Scholarship awards.

Semifinalists are among more than 1.1 million students who entered the 1998 Merit Program as juniors by taking the 1996 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as a screen of program entrants. The highest scorers in each state - less than 1 percent of a state's graduating class - were designated semifinalists.

Semifinalists advance to the finalist level of the competition by fulfilling additional requirements. They must maintain an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by their high school principals, and submit SAT scores that confirm the earlier qualifying test performance. The student and a school official must complete a detailed scholarship application that includes a self-descriptive essay and information about the student's involvement in school and community activities.

Three types of scholarships will be awarded in 1998. Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April.
