Some people call today's youth of America lazy or self-centered. A group from the Mentone United Methodist Youth Fellowship is just a handful of teen-agers out to prove them wrong.
The 10 young people decided they wanted to do some volunteer work one Saturday each month. In September, they donated their services to Our Father's House.
Our Father's House is a thrift store and shelter for the homeless at 2234 E. Center Street. The shelter offers clothing, shoes, silverware, books, toys, furniture, greeting cards and appliances. Food and diapers are available through work orders.
The Mentone youth painted the exterior of the building and soon discovered there was no permanent sign out front to identify the store.
With the help of Jerry Hudson of Signs & Designs, the teens took matters in their own hands and created a sign for the store.
The sign was delivered Thursday.
The group plans to continue working at the center once each month to do what they can to help where they are needed, said Rosemary Laughlin, one of the youth leaders.
But the teens haven't stopped there. As a special mission project they have also "adopted" a 2-year-old child whose mother is a patron of the store.
