Mentone Resolves Billing Problem

Posted

MENTONE - What was believed to be a discrepancy in billing was settled Monday when a representative of Pro Form Pipe Lining Co. Inc., Mishawaka, addressed the Mentone Town Council.

Harv Hoffman told the council that there wasn't a "not to exceed" clause in the quote and that some of the work was done differently than spelled out in the proposal.

"The pipe was in such bad shape that the work couldn't be done as planned," Hoffman said. "The way the concrete pipes have come apart, more damage would have been done if we used the method from our original proposal."

Hoffman added that the bill reflects "substantial discounting from our end because we realize you're a small community."

The total bill was for $18,200, which was $4,500 over the quoted price. Street superintendent Darrel Miller said it is his opinion that the town "is getting the value for the work done," and the town agreed to pay the balance of the bill.

In other matters, the town will look into whether a Mentone business could place a well at their facility to cut down on the costs of water usage.

Mike Casper of Mentone Egg Products said sinking a well for water used in the breaking plant would help save the company money. "We spend a sizeable amount for water," Casper said.

The business would retain municipal water and sewer for waste.

The issue was tabled until it can be researched as to whether ordinances would prohibit a well.

In other matters, the council:

• Announced that the old dump truck and other items will be sold by open bid at 10 a.m. March 23 at the water shop. Details of the items for sale will be posted.

• Will seek official bids for a new tornado siren in town. One unofficial quote was received and town officials want to purchase the siren with Economic Development Income Tax funds.

• Tabled bids received for mowing the town cemeteries and park until the bids can be reviewed. The contract is expected to be awarded at a special meeting at 6 p.m. March 13 in the town hall.

The Mentone Town Council meets at 7 p.m. the first Monday of each month in the town hall. Council members are Ed Lamar, Ed Rock and Mike Diemer.
