MENTONE – The Mentone Town Council voted against entering a one-year, $5,000 agreement with Kosciusko Economic Development Corporation during the town council meeting Wednesday.
In previous town meetings, KEDCo CEO Alan Tio told the town council the organization would work with towns and area businesses to attract more business.
“I’m not sure how much they can do for us,” said Council President Jill Gross. She also said KEDCo calculated that it would take 6% of the town’s Economic Development Income Tax to cover the $5,000.
Gross said she would like to see how KEDCo helped other towns that entered an agreement before Mentone went ahead with it. She said she went through area town councils’ minutes to see which towns agreed to it and how much it cost them.
From the information that she gathered, Etna Green was the only town to enter an agreement.
If the town had an industrial park that KEDCo could help expand, it might be worth the money, said Town Marshal Jim Eads.
The town council also approved the purchase of a new truck for the police department. The truck will cost $23,704.00 from Palmen Motors, Kenosha, Wisc.
Repaving of streets also was approved.
Utilities Superintendent Josh Shephard said he gave Phend & Brown the go ahead to do the job, which was quoted at $59,760.
The streets to be repaved include Harvard from Main to Jackson, Pearl from 19th to the cemetery entrance, Eisenhower from 19th to Walnut, and the alley behind the fire station to Broadway.
The fire station parking lot also will be patched.
