David Beliles, 512 N. Franklin, Mentone, is the Times-Union winner of the Bracketsball 2001 contest.

He won a big screen television and a digital satellite system from Rock Bottom Warehouse. Beliles was the local winner with 1,988 points out of a possible 2,000 and 1 of 158 tiebreaker points.

The Bracketsball 2001 basketball contest was carried in approximately 100 American newspapers in conjunction with the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

The winner of the $25,000 grand prize was 55-year-old Ridgewood, N.J., sixth-grade math teacher William Myatt. He was one of three contestants nationally who tallied 1,993 of the contest's possible 2,000 points. He became the winner on Tiebreaker 1, where he guessed that the two teams in the championship game would combine for 163 points. The actual total by Duke and Arizona in the game was 154. Myatt's guess was closer than those of the other two tied contestants - Scott Bond, Kennewick, Wash., and Linda Carter, Oklahoma City, Okla.

Denver-based Power Points Inc. operated the contest. Tim McGovern, president of the company, estimated nearly 500,000 entries were received from around the country and scores were uncommonly high because several favored teams made it to the Final Four of the tournament.
