Mentone Man Marks 100th Birthday

MENTONE — A World War II veteran who served northern Indiana as a minister will celebrate his 100th birthday this weekend.

T.R. Jones, Mentone, started life on a farm in Calloway County, Ky., on June 9, 1918.

He served as a medic in the 200th Medical Battalion, 20th Armored Division, United States Army, during World War II. While stationed in Germany, France and Belgium, Jones often organized Bible studies with his fellow soldiers, a trait he would carry on in civilian life.

He met his wife, Louise, during a church service in Murray, Ky., but they wouldn't see each other again until five years later, when they were both students at Murray State College. They will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary in June.

Jones served as minister at Mentone Church of Christ, where he remains a member, and preached for 50 years throughout Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee. He also worked as a middle and high school English teacher.

Jones says his secrets to a long life are loving God, loving your neighbor as yourself, working hard and singing.

He enjoys reading his Bible, playing guitar (often with his son and grandson), telling jokes, playing checkers, baking peanut butter cookies and growing tomatoes. He kept a large vegetable garden until just a few years ago.

He and Louise, 92, have three children: Jim, Kent and Lee Ann; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family is planning a celebration of Jones’ milestone at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mentone Fire Department. Friends are welcome.
