Mentone Council Talks About Cat Problem

Posted

MENTONE – Mentone Town Council discussed the amount of stray cats in town during Wednesday’s meeting.
Victor “Marty” Lantz, who lives on Morgan Street, brought up stray cat issues around his area, saying he thinks the cat problem has gotten worse over the years.
Councilman Tim Croy said he thinks it’s gotten worse everywhere in town.
Councilwoman Shelly Krueger asked Lantz if he knew where the cats were coming from. Town Marshal Keaton Schopf said the cats are just all over and catching them is the problem.
“There’s kittens all the time and I’ve been trying to catch them myself,” he said, but he isn’t fast enough.
Croy said live trapping is all people can technically do. Schopf said if people do get a live trap, they can call Kosciusko County Central Dispatch and an officer will come out and take care of it.
“It’s not an easy task,” Croy said.
In other business, the council:
• Approved a quote from Gaunt & Son Asphalt Inc. for $39,850 to mill the Mentzer Park parking lot.
Utilities Superintendent Josh Shepherd said if everything goes well, the parking lot will get milled starting Tuesday.
• Heard there is no dumping in the dumpster behind the fire station.
Schopf said there have been issues. There is now a sign near the dumpster and there are cameras pointing at the dumpster.
Schopf said if people are caught dumping, they will be ticketed.
• Heard Lonnie Slabaugh from Slabaugh Metal Fabrications Inc. put hitching posts by Bell Memorial Library and Subway.
A third one is planned to be put at Mentzer Park.
• Heard the Mentone Maker's Market & Antique Fair is from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 8 and 22.
