MENTONE - During Tuesday night's Mentone Town Council meeting, Clerk-Treasurer Barb Ross said the town needs to ask for an additional appropriation from the Economic Development Income Tax fund to take care of storm water bills as they come in as the grant money won't come in until sometime next year.
She said they need to ask for $89,700 from EDIT for the stormwater fund. The additional appropriation has to be advertised and the council has to have a public hearing on it.
The council approved, and the hearing will be during the regular Oct. 4 meeting.
Ross said the money they spend on the stormwater project now should be reimbursable to the town once they take care of the grant.
Ross said the State Board of Accounts audited the town's books and everything is fine.
She requested the council approve the salary ordinance for town employees for 2011, which it did.
Ross said the duplex owner on the corner of Morgan and High streets want to take care of a dead tree on the tree lawn. The property owner asked if the town would pay half of the $200 bill. The council agreed to pay the $100.
Utilities Superintendent Eric Carlin said hydrants will be flushed Sept. 14-15 so residents should be aware of water discoloration.
The cemetery will be cleaned up Oct. 1.
Town Marshal Jim Eads said that by the end of the year, the police department wants to upgrade its Glock handguns. The ones currently owned by the department are six to seven years old. He said the approximate price is more than $700, and that the council should think about it for now.
In October, the police department wants to attend a conference for drug interdiction networking and classes in Kokomo, Eads told the council. While he didn't have the exact cost for the four-day conference, he said the officers going want to stay in Kokomo for three nights instead of driving back and forth every day. The council approved for the officers to stay overnight three nights.
