MENTONE – Several reminders and dates were announced Monday night by the Mentone Town Council during its short monthly meeting.
Clerk-Treasurer Barb Ross requested the council set its 2013 budget meeting. The council decided on June 11 at 6 p.m.
Shelly Kruger, councilwoman, reminded the public the farmers market opens Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. New vendors can get a form at the market to have a booth. Kruger said she plans to be there every Saturday for the farmers market.
Council President Tim Croy said spring clean up is scheduled for May 16.
“Set your stuff on the curb line, not on the streets,” Croy said.
He also said Stamp Out Hunger Day is Saturday. For Mentone, Helping Hands is having a collection point of non-perishable food items at the Big Egg downtown Mentone from 8 a.m. to noon.
During the whole month of May, General Mills is teaming up with the fire department for a food drive, Croy said. The drop-off point for items for Helping Hands is at the Dollar General Store in town.
Town Marshal Jim Eads had two items to report.
At the April meeting, Eads reported the police department was going to spend $350 on bike safety materials. However, Cargill is now going to be the corporate sponsor for it, Eads said.
The bike safety program will be done when school starts back up in the fall. With the corporate sponsorship, Eads said the department will not have to spend the $350.
Mentone’s police department also participated in the drug disposal program where people could drop off their prescription medications that they no longer need. The event was April 28.
Eads said they collected a regular-size garbage bag of drugs again.
While the state is hosting the program every six months, Eads said that’s too often for Mentone. They will hold it once a year.
During the meeting, the council also approved the minutes and claims.
The town council members are Croy, Kruger and Jill Gross. They meet on the first Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the community building.
