Mentone Accepting Applications For August 'Day Of Caring'

Posted
MENTONE - Residents of Mentone who need work done to their house or yard, but can't do it themselves physically or monetarily, may get some help in August.

Mentone Town Councilman Roger Long said Monday that residents can fill out an application for the August 2007 Day of Caring. The Day of Caring is supported by the United Way and the Housing Authority of Kosciusko County.Residents fill out the application, available at Java Jack's, and return it by the end of May either by fax or mail. The fax number and address are on the application.

United Way and the Housing Authority then evaluates each application to determine who will be assisted during the 2007 Day of Caring. Monies are limited, Long said, but anyone can fill out the application.

United Way and Housing Authority will have the materials needed donated, and find the volunteers to do the work.

Long said for the elderly or poor people in Mentone, the Day of Caring is a good thing. The bad thing, though, he said, is that they will have to wait until August to get the work done.

"This was a big success in Winona Lake," said Long.

He also asked if the fire hydrant near the U.S. Metals pole barn needed raised. Eric Carlin, utilities department, said he did not believe there was an issue with it, but they could take a look.

Street sweeping in town, according to Darrell Miller, street department, will be May 21-23. On May 21, residents should not park on the north and east side of the streets. On May 22, vehicles should not be parked on the south and west sides.

The town council also depleted the rest of its 50/50 sidewalk and curb money for 2007. The town will pay half of the curb improvement for Frank Hardesty, of 506 W. Main St. The town's half is $1,600, which is the remaining money the town had available for the program this year.

In the program, residents may request the town to pay for half of sidewalk or curb improvement if the residents make the request before the project is started and if the town has the money available. The town only allocated about $5,000 for 2007. Residents can still request to be a part of the program, but no monies will be available until 2008.

Mentone town council members are Long, President Tim Croy and Jack Simpson.
