Men occasional victims, too

Domestic violence is not limited to husbands hitting their wives - cases of abused men also have been reported, though not nearly as many as those of abused women.

Lisa Eckert, victim's assistant for Kosciusko County, said in six years she has seen three male victims of spouse abuse. She believes there are more, but thinks men are more reluctant to report abuse than women.

"No doubt there are a lot of guys who don't report it" for fear of being ridiculed or disbelieved, she said.

Kosciusko County's shelter for abused women, the Beaman Home, arranged help for a battered man last year, said Jeannie Campbell, the Beaman Home's director. But it's not a need that arises as often as the need to help battered women.

Lack of police reports makes it difficult to determine the frequency or severity of male battering.

According to the FBI, the number of women attacked by spouses, former spouses, boyfriends, parents or children is more than 10 times higher than the number of males attacked by such people.
