Memorial Day Services, Events On Tap

With Memorial Day Monday, this weekend will be a time to honor the men and women who gave their lives so the United States can be free.

Some of the Memorial Day services being held in the area include:

American Legion Post 49, Warsaw, will hold its service at 11 a.m. Monday at Oakwood Cemetery. David Beall will speak. Following services, there will be a carry-in dinner at the Post.

American Legion Post 223, Syracuse, will hold its traditional Memorial Day parade and service at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Henry Ward Park, Ind. 13, Syracuse.

The parade lineup will be at noon at Syracuse Elementary School. The parade will travel along Huntington Street and will finish at the Syracuse Cemetery.

Pastor Steve Kaehr from Calvary United Methodist Church is expected to be the guest speaker for the ceremony at the cemetery.

North Webster's American Legion Herbert Kuhn Post 253 is planning its service also for Monday.

Services for Memorial Day will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Salem Cemetery in Wilmot. At 10 a.m., a service at Mock Cemetery will be held.

Post 253 will host a gathering at 10:30 a.m.

The parade will begin at 10:45 a.m. at the downtown stoplight, intersection of Ind. 13 and Washington Street.

The final Memorial Day service in North Webster will be at North Webster Cemetery at 11 a.m. The Rev. Noel Reed, North Manchester, will speak.

South Whitley AMVETs Post 2919 will begin the program Monday at 10 a.m. with services at Eel River Bridge on State Street. A march to the cemetery will follow, with services at the flagpole. After the ceremony, the public is invited to visit the Post.

Pierceton American Legion Post 258 will have a parade on Ind. 13 at 10 a.m. Monday starting at the Dollar General Store. The parade will proceed north from First Street up Ind. 13 to Brower Park, where a service will be held.

Milford's parade will be Monday, with lineup beginning at 9 a.m. and the parade starting at 10 a.m.

Participants should enter off Ind. 15 on Emeline Street. Parade directors will position all entries at that time. The loading and unloading of equipment will be at Milford Elementary School parking lot.

Services will begin after the parade at Milford Cemetery at approximately 11 a.m. American Legion Ancil Geiger Post 226 will host the ceremony, with Living Gospel Church, Nappanee, Pastor Otto Beer Jr. speaking.

Dewart Lake Memorial Day Weekend Flotilla starts at 2 p.m. Sunday, with rain date being 2 p.m. Monday. The flotilla will circle Dewart Lake clockwise and will begin in the bay next to the public access site. To participate in the parade, call Larry Gill at 574-658-9332.
