DUNLAP - Veteran Warsaw boys track coach Troy Akers wasn't looking in a crystal ball on that day less than a month ago, just knew what he was talking about.
Akers, whose Tiger track teams went undefeated in regular season action for nearly five years, tabbed Elkhart Memorial as the team to beat this year in the Northern Lakes Conference.
Indeed Akers was right.
After halting Warsaw's 40-plus meet win streak, Memorial came out on top of the Tigers again Thursday in finals of the NLC Meet at Concord.
The Crimson Chargers followed up their 7-0 round robin record by scoring 129 meets in the conference meet to come away with the conference crown. Warsaw, which went 6-1 in round robin action, finished second with 108 points, good enough for a second-place finish in the overall standings.
"We had a good performance last night," Akers said. "We lost a little opportunity to close the gap Tuesday in the prelims. We didn't perform quite as well in the field events. I was holding out some hope we could score in the distance races, which we were shut out in. You get shut out in those events, you're chances are slim."
Concord was third with 100 points, followed by Wawasee (80), NorthWood (71.5), Northridge (65), Plymouth (39) and Goshen (30).
Memorial's win halted what would have been Warsaw's third straight NLC Meet win.
"Overall I'm very pleased how things went," Akers said. "We're really looking forward to the sectional. This team still has the potential to send more kids to the state meet than I ever have. It's time for the cream to rise to the top."
In the girls meet, Northridge edged Plymouth 112-110, leaving the two teams tied for the championship in the overall standings. Plymouth finished 7-0 in round robin action, while Northridge's only loss came to Plymouth.
Memorial's girls finished third in the NLC Meet with 81 points, followed by NorthWood (76), Goshen (69), Warsaw (58), Concord (53) and Wawasee (25).
Warsaw's boys team led local competitors with first-place finishes in four of the 16 events.
With Ryan Hill, Brad Seiss, Grady Randall and Adam Sisson, the Tigers set a new record of 43.30 seconds in the 400 relay. The foursome's effort broke the time of 43.50 set by Concord in 2000.
"All year long we've had good sprinters," Akers said. "We've been able to do it with different kids. At the Max Truex we used Adam Bott, and we ran a good time there. He's kind of our utility man. Last night it was Ryan Hill. The kids had a great race. They executed their handoffs to perfection."
Other Warsaw firsts included Randall in the 300 hurdles, Sisson in the 400 and the team of Adam Bott, Randall, Seiss and Chris Clay in the 1600 relay.
Wawasee's boys team came home with five second-place finishes, taking runner-up honors in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles with Anthony Argentino, in the 1600 with Ryan Stichter, the 3200 with Flaco Perales and the 3200 relay with Eric Gingerich, David Slabaugh, Stichter and Luke Stoffel.
Neither Warsaw or Wawasee came away with a first-place finish in girls action.
The highest finish turned in by a local girl came from Warsaw's Jennifer Finch, who took second in the 3200 with a time of 12:14.
Warsaw's girls took third-place finishes in the 200 with Claire Beckett and in the 400 and 1600 relays.
Wawasee's girls team got their highest finish from Brittany Winchester, who finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:25.43.
