Meet Doesn't Finish, But It's All Plymouth

Posted

PLYMOUTH -ÊFor the Three Rivers Conference teams in the Plymouth Sectional (Tippecanoe Valley, Manchester, Whitko, Rochester, and Northfield), Thursday night's track meet felt like deja vu.

Last Friday's TRC meet was suspended due to rain after all the teams competing were ushered inside to wait for a storm to pass. It looked like the same was going to happen at Thursday's sectional competition, as storms let loose about halfway through the meet.

Competitors and spectators were ushered inside the high school after officials witnessed flashes of lightning around 7:15 p.m. Teams, coaches and fans were then sent to inside hallways of Plymouth High School and advised to stay away from glass because of a tornado watch and severe thunderstorms.

After waiting more than two hours for the storm to pass, everyone was informed that the meet would resume at 9:30 p.m. with the 300 intermediate hurdles as the first event.

Going into the hiatus, Plymouth held a decisive lead over second-place Culver Military Academy, 102-46. Triton sat in third with 37 points, and Tippecanoe Valley was fifth with 35. With 16 points, Manchester was seventh and Whitko was ninth with nine points.

Matt Anders' first-place finish in the 400 and second place finish in the 100 helped lead Triton to that third place standing at the break. Jim Read finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6-foot-0, and Aaron Trieschman placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 127-5.

Tippecanoe Valley's Eric Carlin placed second with a time of 15.06 in the 110 high hurdles, and the Viking 400 meter relay team of Carlin, Casey Wise, Kevin Paxton and David Tilden placed fourth before taking the weather-related timeout.

Manchester's Annon Gaerte (second, 110 hurdles) and Nate Kerr (fourth, 400) led the Squires before the rain delay.

"Overall, our team did an outstanding job," said Manchester coach Ned Bowman. "It has been a long season for us. We've had a really good effort, but our times are not as good as we had hoped they would be. But the guys really made up for it tonight. The effort was really here tonight."

The majority of Whitko's points came from the 3200-meter relay team of Mike McKeighen, Micah Moncrief, Philip Fetro and Tylen Hull and their fourth-place finish.

Valley and Manchester began to make their move after the two-hour break. In the first race after the delay, Annon Gaerte and Eric Carlin battled in the 300 hurdles and placed first and second respectively.

"Annon Gaerte stood out tonight," said Bowman. "He was fourth in the 110 hurdles and first in the 300 hurdles. That 300 hurdle race is the best I've ever seen him run, even in the pouring rain."

"Carlin ran well," said Valley coach Terry Screeton. "He qualified in both hurdle races."

Then Nick Winters and Craig Kuhn competed in the shot put finals. Winters' throw of 45-8 1/2 was good enough to place second, while Kuhn's toss of 44-7 earned him a fourth-place finish.

Then Whitko's Hull finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:01.77, just 49 tenths of a second behind CMA's Karl Hausmann.

"We had an up and down type of meet," said Screeton. "I saw a lot of good things tonight. Craig Kuhn did well in the shot put and disc, and he qualified in the shot. The (400) relay team ran a personal best. They did not qualify, but that's what you want to do when you come here."

Triton's Anders then placed first in the 200 meters before Manchester's 1600 relay team won the last race of the night. Kerr, Gaerte, Josh Whiteman, and Trent Penrod teamed up to run the mile relay in 3:34.93, more than a full second faster than Plymouth, the nearest competitor. Whitko's team of Moncrief, Hull, McKeighen and Brent Goble placed third, while Triton's Chico Pizano, Brent Hammond, Brandon Zeider and Anders finished fourth in the relay.

"The weather was difficult, but it was difficult for everyone," said Whitko coach Ron Cherry. "I'm a little disappointed, I thought we would do better. But we've got some guys who will be competing next week, and that's what counts."

The finals for the pole vault competition were postponed until today at 5:30 p.m. The top four places in each event advance to next week's regional in Kokomo Thursday.
