Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins declared this month as Firefighter Appreciation Month in Warsaw during Monday's Warsaw City Council meeting.
Wiggins read and presented the proclamation to Warsaw Fire Chief Mike Rice and Warsaw Fire Chief of Inspections Mike Wilson during the meeting.
Warsaw firefighters will participate in the "Fill the Boot" campaign Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon to collect money to assist the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The campaign provides medical services at local clinics, summer camps, research grants, support groups and public education seminars at no cost to children and families. MDA is sponsoring Warsaw Firefighter Appreciation month.
Rice presented a letter from Baugo Township Fire Department Chief Mark Smith thanking the WFD for their assistance at a fire in Elkhart June 14.
The council approved a WFD activity report for June with 143 responses.
The council also approved a request from Young Tigers Football for the city to donate $5,000 toward a new concession stand and restroom building at Fribley Field.
The funds will come from the city's rainy day fund, Wiggins said.
Carl Sowers, Young Tigers Football, requested the city's contribution and said a groundbreaking ceremony for the concession stand and restroom building is scheduled for the second week of September.
Councilmen Bob Morrison thanked the community and fire and police departments for their participation and assistance in the American Legion Lance Corporal David Fribley Young Tiger Football Motorcycle Ride. The ride was held July 28 to raise funds for Young Tigers Football and orphans of troops killed in action.
The council also:
n Approved an ordinance on second reading for compensation levels for 2008 for city employees. The council approved the ordinance on first reading at its July 16 meeting.
n Approved a resolution to allow the Warsaw Parks department to borrow $300,000 from its general fund and transfer it to the park fund.
n Approved an ordinance transferring $2,100 for communication and travel expenses to allow Human Resources Director Jennifer Whitaker to attend an Indiana Association of Cities and Towns conference in Evansville in October.
n Approved a request from Oakwood Cemetery to transfer $10,000 from its land purchase fund into improvements other than buildings.
The purpose of the transfer is to allow the cemetery to have funds to pay for the construction of a new road by the last row in the cemetery going north and south.
The cemetery has sold 167 lots this year and have 159 remaining and needs more space. The road will be extended 52 feet.
The council set a budget hearing for city budgets Aug. 14 at 5:30 p.m., and not-for-profit budgets will be discussed at the Warsaw City Council meeting at city hall Aug. 20.
