May is Mental Health Month and is observed nationwide by organizations dedicated to mental health-related issues. According to Mental Health America, the observance began in 1949. This year’s theme is “Mind Your Health,” and according to the website, the organization’s goals are “to build public recognition about the importance of mental health to overall health and wellness; inform people of the ways that the mind and body interact with each other; and provide tips and tools for taking positive actions to protect mental health and promote whole health.” Literature on mental health issues is available at any of the Bowen Center’s 11 locations in 10 Northern Indiana counties, including Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Marshall, Noble, Steuben, Wabash and Whitley counties. Information can also be found at the Center’s website at www.bowencenter.org where visitors can take a free depression check or browse the numerous resources and services provided. Founded in 1961, the Otis R. Bowen Center for Human Services, Inc., is a private not-for-profit, comprehensive community mental health center licensed by the State of Indiana Division of Mental Health.
